One of the leading electric companies the area, Concho Valley Electric Cooperative, Inc. (CVEC) has been serving the rural residents of the San Angelo, TX area for decades. Since May 1940, we have been a non-profit organization owned by our members. Carroll Land was the first general manager, and after he had hired employees, CVEC became very busy. For a $5.00 membership fee, residents could become CVEC members and enjoy excellent electric service. Mr. Land and his crews got to work, engineering, staking, setting poles, and constructing the lines. In July 1941, the first meter was energized. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mazur were the first to receive electric service, and their meter was located 2¾ miles south of Veribest.
Customers in San Angelo have
more than one choice when it comes to selecting an electricity
company to supply their home or business. Traditional electric
service providers might seem convenient but they are oftentimes not
the best deal for your money. Becoming a part of an electric co-op
is a great way to cut costs on your utility bills and become a part
of a company that truly cares about their members.
Our electric co-op has divided our service area into 6 nominating areas. Once a director’s term expires, each area holds a nominating meeting each year in the district in question. The area nominates one of their members as a new director, and then all directors are voted in during the annual meeting. (This is held in July of every year.) Directors serve for 3 years and elect their own officers, one of the most important being the Chief Executive Officer. He or she will oversee the day-to-day operations of our electric service provider. CVEC has had six CEOs since our founding: Carroll Land, Jack Webb, Alton Rollans, Weldon Gray, Sid Long, and Kelly Lankford, our current CEO. All of CVEC’s employees report to the CEO; the CEO reports to the Board, and the Board reports to our entire membership. This chain of command ensures that CVEC lives up to our motto: “Member Owned By Those We Serve.”
If you're looking to join an
electric co-op, consider CVEC of San Angelo, TX. Other electric
companies try to compete with our customer service and our rates
but they always fall short. Just compare CVEC to other electric
power companies and see for yourself. We are an outstanding
electricity company backed by years of service.
Since our electric service provider was founded in 1940, CVEC has grown with every passing year. Today, we serve 6,065 members and have 13,600 meters connected to our system. Our coverage area stretches over ten counties – Tom Green, Coke, Concho, Sterling, Mitchell, Nolan, Runnels, Glasscock, Irion, and Reagan – an area of over 4,175 square miles. A total of 58 employees manage our electricity company, making sure that our members get free-flowing, safe electricity delivered over 4,200 miles of lines. All told, we deliver 265 million KWH of electricity each year, and we have assets of more than $76 million.
Unlike other electric power companies, CVEC is member-owned and completely not-for-profit. Once we have paid our expenses, we return our revenue directly to our members as a capital credit. We allocate these funds yearly, as our financial position permits. We are proud to say that we have refunded $5,787,864 to our member-owners over the years as capital credits.
CVEC’s employees are busy every day ensuring that our member-owners get the best service. We have construction, maintenance, and service crews to create new lines, maintain, and operate the entire electrical system. Meter readings are automatic and are transmitted to the cooperative without additional labor for our employees or members. The personnel at our headquarters at 2530 Pulliam Street in San Angelo take care of essential duties such as monthly billing, administrative work, corporate accounting, engineering and mapping, data processing, and other support functions.
CVEC’s services are engrained in the community. Most of our members can’t remember the day that electricity first came to their homes. For many, electricity was automatically part of the home, a necessity like running water. However, even though the world has greatly changed since 1940, our duties as employees stay the same. Our goal is to adapt to the many changes taking place in the world. We want all of our members, old and young, veterans and new, to feel lucky and proud to be part of our unique organization – the Concho Valley Electric Cooperative.
Every single employee has to pull together, apply team effort, and be completely committed so we can live up to our promise: “CVEC – Member Owned – We Care.”
